b.e.s.t. Universal Screening

Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) at Columbus Catholic Schools

Columbus Catholic Schools are committed to supporting the academic and social emotional growth of every student. We use a Multi Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to provide timely, targeted interventions based on student needs.

How MTSS Works

Through universal screening in reading, math, and behavioral health, our staff can identify students who are thriving as well as those who may need additional support. Screenings are given two to three times per year and may include state or district test results along with specific academic or behavior assessments. This process allows us to take proactive steps early to ensure student success.

Academic Screening

We use the STAR assessment in math and reading to pinpoint areas where students may have gaps in knowledge and benefit from extra support.

Behavioral Health Screening

For behavioral health, we use the Behavioral Emotional Social Traits (b.e.s.t.) Universal Screening Platform. This tool, completed by teachers (not students) in November and April, helps identify both externalizing and internalizing behaviors. Results guide supports such as mentoring, social skills development, and strategies to foster positive engagement in learning.

Our Commitment

By linking student supports directly to data, we can ensure that each child has the opportunity to achieve academic and social emotional success.

If you have questions, or if you would like your child to be opted out of the universal screening process, please contact your building principal.
