The School Counselor

School Counselors (formerly known as Guidance Counselors) support all students in grades K through 12 in the areas of academic achievement, social and emotional development, and career planning. In Wisconsin, school counselors are licensed professionals who have completed an approved master’s program and an extensive internship.

The work of a school counselor is multifaceted. Counselors guide, teach, encourage, and lead as needed. They may meet individually with students, teach classroom lessons on emotional literacy, communication skills, or conflict management, and support students with behavioral needs. Counselors also help foster positive relationships among students through group activities and collaborative projects.

At Columbus Catholic Schools, the counseling program takes a whole-child approach, addressing the academic, spiritual, social, emotional, and psychological well-being of each student. Maintaining a healthy balance across these areas is essential to overall wellness and long-term success.

Collaboration with dedicated teachers and administrators, community partners, and research-based social and emotional learning programs enhances the effectiveness of school counseling. When additional support is needed, counselors can connect students and families with appropriate resources such as local professionals, community agencies, support groups, educational events, or helpful materials.

The goal of the counseling program is to light the way to wellness and remind students and families that No One Is Alone.
